Charges for green bin collections will be introduced for Kenilworth residents from August.

A £20 fee will be required from August 1, rising to £44 annually from April 2023 for the fortnightly garden waste collections.

Charges were approved by Warwick District Council last night, meaning that all Warwickshire borough and district councils will now charge for their green bins.

Once the new 123+ system begins in August, all residents will receive weekly food waste collections - only those that pay for garden waste collections will receive it.

Cllr Alan Rhead, portfolio holder for environment and neighbourhood services said: "This was a difficult decision, but as the collection of garden waste is a discretionary service, we would rather give our residents the choice of paying rather than withdrawing it completely."

Residents will be able to purchase the new permits from May.

WDC is also planning to allocate £50,000 just to pay for the marketing and administration involved in introducing the new fees.

The council anticipates to generate over £1million annually from the new charge.

But some residents have already said they will not be signing up.

"I am not sure where they expect to get the £1m revenue from," one Facebook user said. "Those people who use the green bin for food waste will just put it in the black bin and save the £44."

Whilst another added: "Is this the way the councils want us to be part of being green and recycling?

"Sorry, I will opt out. We already pay a small fortune to the council in council tax, they have already reduced bin collections to every other week.

"All prices are going up and they want more out of a stone that unfortunately has bled dry."
