The route for the cycling road race for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games has been announced.

Taking place on Sunday, August 7 the route will start and finish at a ticketed venue at St Nicholas Park in Warwick.

The 16km loop through the centre of Warwick will be completed 10 times by the men in the afternoon and seven times by the women in the morning.

The course will see the riders leave St Nicholas Park and head past the castle and over the A46 to Hampton on the Hill and Budbrooke.

Riders will return to Warwick down the A4177 and head to Leamington past Victoria Park before returning to St Nicholas'.

Warwickshire County Councillor Heather Timms said she is "very proud" that Warwick will hold the road race which promises to be an "incredible event next year".

"Having studied the route for the road race, we are very happy that it showcases so much of the historic splendour of the town of Warwick and that it will provide a challenging course for competitors in August 2022," she added.

"Warwickshire has been building an international reputation as a venue for world-class cycling for years since the county first hosted a stage of the Women's Tour and, later, of the Tour of Britain. This is another opportunity for us to shine in front of a global audience."

The route is circular and will be operational for most of the day during Sunday 7 August 2022. This will require full road closures during the day – the detailed operational planning is still being worked on.
