Kenilworth Sporting FC have been named Team of the Month for the Midlands League Division Three, the first award the team has won since reforming this season.

Sporting currently sit at the top of the Midlands League Division Three, having won seven of their opening eight fixtures.

The Team of the Month Award, which was announced yesterday (December 9) recognises the achievements of the team during the month of October.

Sporting entered October in second place, behind league leaders Coventrians only on goal difference as both sides had won all of their opening four fixtures.

The Kenilworth outfit then claimed the top spot after a 3-0 away win against Sutton United, a position they have held ever since

Sporting claimed nine points from a possible 12 in October, scoring 13 and conceding just four.

Their only defeat of the season came in a 2-1 away loss to Upton Town.

After receiving the award, Sporting manager Martin Ascroft said "receiving the team of the month award is normally a jinx. I'm hoping that its not for us.

"The players deserve all the accolades, they have been fantastic and a credit to the club.

"I am delighted for Geoff [Harris] our owner, and Mark our secretary. The work they do in the background goes unseen, but without them the team doesn't function."

The league leaders remain waiting for the chance to continue their pursuit of the league title, as all grassroots sport was cancelled during the second national lockdown.

They are currently scheduled to travel away to fifth-placed Inkberrow on December 19, but it remains to be seen whether this fixture will go ahead or not. In the meantime they have a friendly against Nuneaton Griff this Saturday.

Nuneaton sit two divisions above Kenilworth. "It will be a very tough test," says Ascroft "but ideal to blow off the cobwebs and get some minutes playing."
