The school cycling campaigners Isadora McAinsh and George Bell deserve our thanks and encouragement for their efforts to hold Warwickshire County Council to delivering safe cycling facilities that it has promised.

WCC's leader, Cllr Izzi Seccombe made positive, if rather casual approval of the campaigners, but sadly, local authorities in our area have a consistently dismal record of heel dragging when it comes to real action for safe cycling.

Councillors have renewed calls to upgrade the Leamington to Coventry rail line to a dual track whilst urging railway bosses to allow mainline train services to stop at Kenilworth Station.

The demands come after one councillor dubbed the line an expensive white elephant with another lamenting that passengers had to endure a below-par service on one of the worst performing lines in the country.

A 'near death' experience and a series of other close encounters with vehicles have prompted one Kenilworth councillor to call for action from the Government, county council and Warwickshire's police chief.

Cllr Andrew Milton (Lib Dem, Kenilworth St John's) said he was frustrated at the lack of progress over the approved K2L (Kenilworth to Leamington) cycle route and admitted he was regularly scared by the antics of drivers as he cycled to work.

Warwick District Council has frozen its council tax charge for the coming year – one of just a handful to keep their portion of the bill the same as for 2021/22.

With the support of the Labour and the Whitnash Residents Association groups, the measures were approved at the full council meeting held this week at Warwick Shire Hall.
