New residents could soon be given a 'Welcome to Kenilworth' leaflet when they move to the town, thanks to a new initiative from the council.

Last week councillors voted in favour of launching a new group aimed at engaging new homeowners and renters with what is going on in the local area.

Councillors are hoping the first batch of leaflets - some 1,500 - will be available by the end of April, and will be given out by local estate agents and housing developers across Kenilworth.

Members at Kenilworth Town Council were told the initiative is particularly important given some 2,000 new homes will be built locally within the next decade.

"Community life is one of the things that is generally regarded as a major contributing factor to making Kenilworth such a special place in which to live, work, learn and visit," a council report said.

"It's one of the town's brand attributes.

"A thriving community doesn't happen by accident: it needs people with ideas and energy to make it happen.

"And, rather than being static, is constantly evolving with new things happening and long established things changing to keep them fresh."

Councillors found nearly all local estate agents and sales offices in Kenilworth give new residents and tenants a 'bounty-style' new home pack with practical content, immediately on moving home.

The council wants the new leaflets to be included in these hampers.

Some of the information in the leaflet will include details of:

  • Local community services e.g. the library and Castle Farm Leisure Centre
  • Emergency services
  • Medical centres and dentists
  • Important phone numbers
  • Places of faith
  • Sports clubs
  • Community groups e.g. Friends of Abbey Fields, theKenilworthCentre, Waverley Day Centre and uniformed organisations;
  • Location of green spaces and children's play areas
  • Contact details for the town, district and county councils (including how to get a resident's castle pass and how to register to vote)
  • A calendar of annual community events.
