The £38 million works at Stoneleigh Island will not be finished until "later in the year" Warwickshire County Council (WCC) has confirmed.

The major project to build a new bridge and roundabout at the A46 junction was due to be completed in summer 2022, but has been slowed by "various issues" including supply problems.

Last September Nub News reported the project had been given a revised completion date of "winter 2023/24" as a solution to the recent supply issue was found.

However, the local authority has now said this project will not be finished so soon.

"We are looking forward to full completion later in the year and are working with the contractor to achieve this," a statement said.

"Good progress has been made with substantial elements of the scheme nearing completion.

But while the new bridge deck was installed at the end of January 2023, it is yet to be connected to the new road layout.

In September the council said this was because the material to backfill the bridge "could not be obtained" as part of a national issue.

The existing bridge over the A46 at Stoneleigh was also closed for weeks at the end of last year, as works to install a new parapet continued.

The Stoneleigh Road crossing was closed between the slip roads at the start of October before reopening on the first weekend of December.

The closure meant motorists wishing to travel south on the A46 from the University of Warwick had to pass through Kenilworth to reach the dual carriageway.

WCC blamed the lengthy closure on the works been "more complicated" than expected.

It added: "Due to the age of the structure, we have been having difficulties in retrofitting a new parapet to the old structure.

"We carried out initial survey works to inform the design; this was to ensure the new parapet did not interfere with key structural elements of the structure.

"Once the old parapet was removed further survey works were carried out to verify the initial survey work.

"These surveys were either inconclusive or contradictory to the previous results. To be sure we did not do long term detrimental damage to the structure further tests were carried out on the structure by drilling pilot holes where we intend to erect the parapet.

"This has been an iterative process and has taken much longer than anticipated."

In September Nub News was also told the project remained within budget. However following an request to clarify whether this was still the case, we were told "commercial matters cannot be commented on during the construction".
