Locals have until the end of September to have their say on plans for a new zebra crossing, speed humps and cycle route along a busy Kenilworth road.

Warwickshire County Council (WCC) has launched a public consultation on the designs for Warwick Road, which come after years of work trying to improve the safety along the busy route into town.

If approved, the scheme would see a shared footpath and cycle track created along the road, from the junctions with Rouncil Lane and Wilkshire Road.

An update on the WCC website said: "We are developing proposals to improve walking, wheeling and cycling facilities along Warwick Road in Kenilworth between Rouncil Lane and Wilkshire Road.

"The proposed scheme is part of our programme of new cycle routes to enable more people to cycle for short local journeys, helping to tackle congestion, improve air quality, reduce carbon emissions, and support physical activity.

"The project aims to improve connections between existing residential areas, local sports clubs and the wider cycle network, while encouraging more sustainable travel choices.

"The new route will help improve connections between Kenilworth and Leek Wootton, as well as links to the town centre, school, train station and onwards to Coventry and the University of Warwick."

Also included in the plans are a zebra crossing with parallel cycle crossing across Warwick Road, just south of the Rouncil Lane junction.

This would be on a new speed hump, replacing two of the existing speed cushions.

The cycle path would link around the corner of Rouncil Lane to Suncliffe Drive and another crossing would be created at the junction of Newey Drive and Warwick Road.

This would also be on a road hump.

Feedback must be sent to the council by 28 September 2026.

Town councillors have been calling for improved safety along Warwick Road for a number of years, following the completion of The Pavilions housing estate.

The road has already seen the speed limit reduced from 50mph to 30mph and a number of speed bumps installed.

In 2022 Kenilworth Town Council backed plans to improve the estate's connection to the town, signing off on funding to reduce the speed limit along Warwick Road.

A feasibility study conducted at the time found there was £450,000 in section 106 funding - money from housing developers - at the county council "set aside for improving cycling provision in St John's".
