'Support local' is the message from Kenilworth shops in the run up to Christmas.

Town centre businesses are getting ready for the return of Thursday late night shopping as they look to encourage residents to buy their gifts from local vendors.

Starting on Thursday 20 November, many town centre shops will be staying open late until 7pm, giving residents and visitors the chance to browse, shop and enjoy the festive atmosphere after work.

The extended hours are part of the Shop Kenilworth initiative, a local campaign encouraging residents to support independent traders and keep spending local.

Carl Edmonds, owner of Edmonds Jewellers, said: "Late night shopping will bring such a nice buzz to the town.

"People can take their time, enjoy the lights and maybe stop for a drink or bite to eat.

"It's all about getting people into the town centre and into local, independent businesses."

Many of the town's small businesses will also be taking part in Sunday shopping days, with special events planned to make Kenilworth's high street a lively weekend destination.

Recent Sundays have already seen plenty of festive cheer - including an appearance from alpacas outside Kenilworth Books on Sunday (November 9) - and Father Christmas is rumoured to be heading to town.

"Shop Kenilworth is such an important campaign because it reminds people that when they buy from local stores, they're supporting their neighbours and helping keep the high street alive," Carl continued.

"We've got some fantastic independent retailers here, and this is the perfect time to rediscover them."

Shop Kenilworth was launched last month, bringing together a host of businesses along Warwick Road and High Street to "bang the drum of Kenilworth".
