A Streetcar Named Desire coming to Kenilworth
By James Smith 7th May 2026
As summer draws nearer, this May the Talisman Theatre is "delighted to announce" the staging of Tennessee Williams' best-loved classic drama 'A Streetcar Named Desire'.
After a hugely successful run across the Sheffield Theatres last year and a recent sell-out run in the West End in 2023, this landmark play will bring its fascinatingly powerful story of division, brutality, desire and fragility to the Talisman Theatre main stage this spring.
Set in 1940s deep south USA, the play follows the experiences of Blanche DuBois, a fragile, fading Southern belle who moves in with her sister, Stella, and crude brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski, in New Orleans.
As Blanche's illusions and refined past clash with Stanley's harsh realism, the play erupts into a hard-hitting whirlwind of conflict, torment, deception and desire. Now among the finest and most-performed dramas, the play provides a poignant look into the division between classes and genders and the destructive power of desire and fate.
Joint artistic director Stephen Duckham said: "We are thrilled to be staging one of the finest and most classic dramas ever written.
"The play brings a powerful but also relevant exploration into the division between gender roles and the transition between social classes and I'm sure this will provide a thrilling night for our audiences."
The cast is led by Jo Banbury as Blanche, Paige Phelps as Stella and Richard Morelli as Stanley and also features a stellar supporting cast that includes Dean Sheridan, Paul Sully, Aoife Gorman and Henri West.
The production is directed by Talisman stalwart Chris Carpenter who commented: "I have always been drawn to and enthralled by great literature and great drama in particular.
"A Streetcar Named Desire is one of the greatest plays ever written, and as we work on it in rehearsal, we are constantly impressed by its complexity and its sheer power. For me, it is undoubtedly the finest of Tennessee Williams' fine plays and, indeed, the very finest American play."
Join the Talisman this spring for this powerful tale of desire and destruction.
A Streetcar Named Desire runs from Monday 18 to Saturday 23 May at the Talisman Theatre and Arts Centre, Kenilworth.
