Bigger, bolder and ready to inspire: The KMAT Great Debate expands across the region
By Aaron Dudley 30th Jun 2026
One of Coventry and Warwickshire's most exciting educational competitions is back - and this year, it's set to be bigger than ever.
The KMAT Great Debate has earned a reputation for giving young people a platform to think critically, speak confidently and challenge ideas in a respectful and engaging environment.
Now, with ambitious plans to expand the regional tournament, organisers are inviting even more secondary schools to become part of an event that is quickly establishing itself as one of the highlights of the academic calendar.
The vision is clear: grow participation across Coventry and Warwickshire while welcoming schools from further afield to experience everything that makes the KMAT Great Debate such a unique competition.
Every year, students step into the debating arena to tackle fascinating topics, defend their viewpoints and demonstrate the communication skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives. It's an event that celebrates far more than winning an argument. It encourages curiosity, confidence, teamwork and the ability to listen as well as speak - qualities that employers, universities and communities value enormously.
As the competition continues to grow, organisers are calling on secondary schools from every corner of Coventry and Warwickshire to get involved.
Whether a school has an established debating tradition or is entering a team for the very first time, the KMAT Great Debate promises an unforgettable experience that challenges students to raise their game and discover talents they may never have realised they possessed.
For the first time, schools from outside Coventry and Warwickshire are also being invited to join the regional tournament in the qualification round. This exciting new development will give visiting schools the chance to experience the distinctive KMAT Great Debate format, meet fellow students from across the region and become part of an event that is attracting growing attention for its high standards and welcoming atmosphere.
To preserve the tournament's regional identity, schools from outside Coventry and Warwickshire will not be eligible to progress to the KMAT Great Debate Grand Final, which will continue to showcase the very best debating talent from within the region. However, their journey certainly doesn't end there.
Every visiting school will receive an exclusive early invitation to register for the National Showcase 2027, giving them priority access to what promises to become one of the country's most exciting celebrations of student debate, public speaking and critical thinking. It's an opportunity to build lasting relationships with schools across the UK while experiencing a competition that continues to grow in both scale and reputation.
The KMAT
Hayden Abbott, CEO of the Kenilworth Multi Academy Trust, was effusive in his praise of the expanding tournament: "It is incredibly exciting to see how the KMAT Great Debate has gathered such strong momentum and is attracting widespread interest from schools not only across Coventry and Warwickshire, but increasingly from further afield.
"The competition is providing students from different backgrounds with unique opportunities to collaborate in teams, develop their communication skills and confidently articulate arguments on a wide range of topics.
"Through participation, pupils broaden their general knowledge, strengthen their organisational abilities and grow in confidence. These experiences play a vital role in supporting their personal development and in preparing them for life beyond school.
"What is particularly inspiring is seeing young people engaging with peers from different schools and diverse backgrounds. The KMAT Great Debate demonstrates that success is not simply about winning, but about the valuable life skills developed along the way.
"I have seen teams and individuals show real resilience: accepting defeat with grace, reflecting on their performance and returning stronger the following year. This ability to learn, improve and persevere is something truly special and, sadly, all too rare in many competitive environments.
"The enthusiasm surrounding the debate is infectious, and I am immensely proud of what it has become. I hope to see even more young people, from an even wider range of communities, inspired to take part in the KMAT Great Debate in the years ahead."
Powered by a Community That Believes in Young People
Behind every successful event is a community determined to make a difference, and the KMAT Great Debate is no exception.
The tournament is proudly supported by a growing network of local and regional businesses, charities and organisations that share a passion for education and recognise the importance of equipping young people with the confidence and communication skills they'll need for the future.
Their sponsorship helps create an exceptional experience for every competitor, supporting everything from professional venues and expert judges to awards, educational resources and opportunities that simply wouldn't be possible without community backing.
As the competition expands, organisers are keen to welcome even more businesses and organisations into the KMAT Great Debate family. Supporting the tournament is more than sponsoring an event—it's an investment in the next generation of leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs and changemakers. It's an opportunity for organisations to demonstrate their commitment to education while helping hundreds of students discover what they are capable of achieving.
More Than a Competition
The KMAT Great Debate has become much more than a debating tournament.
For many students, it is the first time they have stood before an audience, defended an opinion or spoken with confidence in front of unfamiliar faces. It is a place where friendships are formed, confidence flourishes and future ambitions begin to take shape.
Visiting teachers regularly describe the transformation they see in students throughout the competition, with quieter pupils finding their voice and experienced speakers refining their leadership skills. The lessons learned extend far beyond the debate floor, helping young people become articulate, resilient and thoughtful citizens.
With more schools, more opportunities and even greater ambition, the next chapter of the KMAT Great Debate promises to be its most exciting yet.
Whether you're a secondary school looking for an unforgettable opportunity for your students, a local organisation eager to support educational excellence or simply someone who believes in celebrating young people's achievements, now is the perfect time to become part of the journey.
