Hearing loss and the increased risk of dementia - Kenilworth expert explains more

Local expert Khiyam Hussnain from Hear Better With Us explains about the connection between hearing loss and dementia.
Many people think of hearing loss as a natural part of getting old, and many do not do anything about it.
A lot of people think losing your hearing is just 'one of those things' and there is a lack of awareness and understanding around what it can actually mean.
The Royal National Institute for Deaf People says hearing loss is the "most significant, potentially reversible, risk factor for dementia".
Meanwhile the Alzheimer's Society has also warned that even a mild hearing loss can double the risk of dementia, and a moderate hearing loss can triple it.
It is vital people get their hearing tested if they are struggling - even a little bit.
Hearing aids - and the improvements they bring - have been associated with fewer memory and cognitive problems.

I believe a lot of people do not seek this support because they do not understand the risks of not doing so.
Dementia is not the only problem of course - difficulty communicating, depression, anxiety, social isolation, cognitive problems and a higher risk of falls are all associated with hearing loss.
This can also impact employability.
There is a huge range of potential causes also, including infections, ear wax build up, trauma and of course age-related hearing loss.
But just because hearing loss has started, does not mean there isn't anything to be done.

When patients come to me at Hear Better With Us, we give them a thorough evaluation and offer free examinations.
If wax is the problem, we can usually remove it on the same day for a fixed price - £40 for one ear or £60 for two. And if nothing is found, we won't charge you.
For those who are found to have permanent hearing loss, we have a wide range of hearing aids for patients to try.
Hearing aids are not cheap, so we offer free trials to make sure our clients are completely satisfied with what they are receiving and know it works for them in their daily lives.
And at Hear Better With Us, the service does not stop there. We offer free aftercare for all hearing aids, meaning you have the peace of mind that you have the support you need if there is a problem.
