Excitement is building as Kenilworth's new swimming pools get ready to open this weekend.

The community is invited to see the new Abbey Fields Swimming Pool on Saturday (July 11) as the facility is opened to the public for the first time.

Members of the press and local councillors were today given early access to the new leisure centre to see inside the multi-million-pound facility for the first time.

MP for Kenilworth and Southam Sir Jeremy Wright told Nub News the swimming pools are a great addition for the town, and he praised Warwick District Council for its bravery in pushing ahead with the project and ensuring the new pools were still built, despite the archaeological remains found during the redevelopment.

Saturday's opening will bring an end to over four years of work in Abbey Fields.

Speaking at today's opening, council chairman Cllr Pam Redford said: "There is no doubt that the journey has not been easy.

"I hope you all agree that these much-anticipated and long-awaited facilities are truly first class.

"We know the additional year-round pool space and accessible schools will be welcomed by families, schools and swimming clubs."

The leisure centre includes two new pools - a main training one and a family pool with a movable floor.

The latter will allow for "a wide variety of water-based sessions" as well as "enhanced opportunities for the disabled to access the water using the latest 'pool-pod' lift technology".

Visitors to the Abbey Fields park will also have full access to the new café.

Free sessions will include inflatables, family swims, lane swimming and Hydrohex, a new virtual aqua group exercise classes in both the training and family pools.

Alex Fuoco-Lang, Everyone Active area contract manager said: "We're thrilled to be hosting this fantastic community open weekend full of activities for our local community to mark the opening of Abbey Fields Swimming Pool.

"We're thoroughly looking forward to celebrating with residents on the day and encourage people to book activities as soon as possible to secure their place. It's a brilliant opportunity to come along and try out their new state-of-the-art swimming facilities first-hand – there really is something for everyone."
