WMG Academy for Young Engineers has retained its good Ofsted rating following a routine inspection this June.

A report published in July said the Mitchell Avenue school made sure students were "incredibly well prepared for the real world".

The inspector found: "Leaders are ambitious for pupils.

"They have developed a broad and ambitious curriculum that extends far beyond the academic.

"For example, through the school's enrichment programme, many pupils represent the school, with great success, in national competitions such as the European Space Agency CanSat and the Royal Navy Engineering Challenge.

"These activities support pupils to develop their love of learning. They also help pupils to develop an understanding of employability skills such as teamwork and resilience."

The report said the principal had a "compelling vision" for the school and said the curriculum had improved despite the challenges of the pandemic.

It also added: "Pupils with SEND, including those in the sixth form, make strong progress."

However the inspection did find that the curriculum "it is not always taught well".

It also noted that while most students were well behaved so were not "because some teachers do not have high enough expectations of pupils' behaviour and conduct".

Ofsted also said sixth form students should be given more enrichment opportunities.

Following the report a spokesperson from the academy said: "We are delighted that the academy has again been judged 'good' by Ofsted despite the many challenges and barriers that the pandemic presented students with in terms of their learning and progress.

"The inspectors were impressed not only by the quality of teaching and attitudes to learning, but also that students develop strong employability skills and move on to positive and appropriate destinations.

"These findings lie at the heart of the academy's 'business-like, business-led' ethos; using the latest technology and our impressive range of employer partners to provide relevant learning experiences that bring the curriculum to life."
