Review: Ploughman's and Cider Tasting at Napton Cidery
Among the variety of events hosted by Napton Cidery is the Ploughman's and Cider Tasting which offers something to everyone from the cider expert to somebody who had never heard of craft cider.
Alongside a selection of six craft ciders and a ploughman's sourced from local producers, guests are taken through the cider making journey from orchard to bottle by one of Napton's owners, Jolyon and Charlotte Oliver.
Taking place in the cidery's welcoming tap room on a working farm in Napton On The Hill, the tasting has something for all.
Priced reasonably at £25 per person, the night began with a tour outside of the cidery, seeing the impressive 1,000 litre fermenters preparing the next batch of craft cider.
Tours usually take place halfway through the night, but the dark October night meant we started outside and returned to the warm for the remainder of the evening.
As we were shown around the grounds Charlotte was on hand to talk guests through the cider making process to educate those with no prior knowledge, but still with something for those already in the know.
And with Charlotte "not following a script" it was clear that we were being looked after by an expert and somebody with a real passion for their work.
After the tour we returned to the converted dairy now taproom to enjoy a ploughman's from Napton Village Stores. One platter is shared between two and is more than filling, with many guests asking the hosts where they could purchase the cheeses and chutneys for themselves.
As we ate we were talked through the different cider blends; told both how to taste the cider and what flavours to expect.
Guests began by trying Napton's bestselling Recipe No.3, a dry cider blended from 17 different apple varieties and made from 99 per cent pure apple – a far cry from the 35 per cent concentrate house ciders you might be served in your local.
As well as sharing tasting notes, Charlotte also talked us through the history of Napton Cidery from her and Jolyon's first dabbles with cider making after a holiday in Devon, to the impressive setup they now run.
Recipe No.4 and Recipe No.5 – a blackcurrant offering – were then enjoyed before Charlotte came to each table individually to chat with guests.
With an iPad she was able to show us photos of the cider pressing process, and answer all our questions from the basic to the detailed.
Once each table had enjoyed its one-to-one, three more ciders were tasted. Recipe No.6 and the Lost Apple blends were served on draft before a taproom special, Katy.
All the ciders were given to each table in decanters, meaning those that were driving could limit their intake, and those that preferred a particular blend could pick and chose how much they had of each.
With the talk concluded, all the guests stayed beyond their one and half hour slot to enjoy more from the bar and to purchase bottles to take home from the cidery's shop.
We were even treated to a bonus spiced ginger cider and apple brandy before the evening was concluded.
As well as enjoying a fantastic evening, guests were left in no doubt that Jolyon and Charlotte are beyond passionate for their business and have big plans for Napton going forward.
