Retired nurse steps up to support Covid-19 vaccination programme at new Stoneleigh vaccination centre

By James Smith 1st Nov 2021

A retired nurse, who has lived in Warwickshire for 25 years, has joined the Covid-19 vaccination programme at Stoneleigh Vaccination Centre to help vaccinate people across Coventry and Warwickshire.

Ian, who is 56, started in his role as a vaccinator today, Tuesday 26 January, when the Stoneleigh Vaccination Centre opened to eligible members of the public.

Ian registered his interest to become a Covid-19 vaccinator after seeing an old colleague, who works at Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust (CWPT) and an advert on the CWPT social media page.

Ian retired in December 2019 from his role as a manager of residential services for people with learning disabilities.

Speaking about joining the vaccination programme, he said: "When I saw the advert on Facebook, I wanted to sign up and do my bit to help. The process was simple; I registered my interest, had an interview, completed the training and here I am today.

"The vaccine gives me hope that we can get protection against this horrible virus and is a light at the end of the tunnel for us all.

"I'm excited to be part of the biggest vaccination programme in history and I'm looking forward to utilising the new skills I've gained from my training."

Mel Coombes, Chief Executive at CWPT, said: "We are really pleased to welcome Ian back to the frontline of the NHS.

"He has come out of retirement to help support the NHS in the delivery of the COVID vaccination programme and we really appreciate his help and support. He will be vital in his role as a vaccinator."

University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW) is looking for people, like Ian, who have a background in health and social care to come forward and join the vaccination programme. Information on the roles available and how to apply can be found on UHCW's website.
