Residents near Birmingham Airport give their reaction to more night time flights
Residents living near Birmingham Airport have been giving their views on the news that there could soon be more flights at night.
Birmingham Airport has applied for permission for more flights to take place between 11.30pm and 6am.
The airport has said the change is needed due to the growth of the airport post-pandemic and if Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council does not approve the change the borough and wider West Midlands could lose out on millions of pounds.
Many residents the Local Democracy Service (LDRS) spoke to in Hazeldene Road near the airport had not heard of the latest application but said they were not overly concerned.
Asked if they hear many planes at night one told us: "It all depends on which way the wind is blowing, whether we hear the planes.
"If it blows (in our direction) you hear it a lot more than if it blows the other way.
"It also depends on which way the planes take off as well."
The resident, who had lived on the road for seven years, said they had noticed more planes at 10pm recently.
"We have got to the point you just blank the noise out," he said.
"We have had our windows and doors redone so it is not as bad – but (the potential increase) will definitely make a difference."
Another resident said: "We hear the flights all the time.
"It sometimes rumbles our house – the kids hear it when the windows are open in the summer."
Another resident said they had heard nothing about the application but were a little disappointed that there would be fewer planes at night, which BHX had originally aimed to do.
But said told us she was confident she wouldn't hear it as she is a "good sleeper".
"Once I'm asleep I don't hear anything," she added.
Another resident added: "You are more aware late at night than in the day – but it doesn't affect my sleep."
A consultation is underway on the application which will run until October 24.
