Town councillors have welcomed a major funding boost for plans to create a 'school zone' on Glasshouse Lane.

Last year Kenilworth Town Council agreed to put £25,000 towards the project around Kenilworth School, and also applied to Warwickshire County Council for match funding of the same amount.

At last week's town council meeting, it was confirmed the application to the local authority has been successful and the project is due to move forward.

A school zone will include signage and other measures to enforce the 20mph speed limit and give priority to pedestrians and cyclists

"As you know we have been working on this for about three years now. I have some good news to report," Cllr Zoe Leventhal told members.

"One of the things we have been working on with the school and county councillors and the county council officers is an application for funding for a school zone outside the school on Glasshouse Lane, to include signage and improve 20mph measures.

"You will recall we put this application in about a year ago to the county council for their highways community action fund for £25,000 to match the town council's CIL funds.

"With a few hiccups along the way we have now had approval for that funding.

"I have received a very positive response from the officer involved saying the proposals have been approved by senior management, design works are under way and they hope to have proposals to share with us soon."

The town council had already spent £4,000 of CIL money - funds from local housing developers infrastructure projects - on a survey on safety around Glasshouse Lane.

It found there were serious issues around the school, which opened in September 2023.

Since then, the town council and the school have been working to make Glasshouse Lane safer for pupils getting to and from the school.
