Plans to build a "temporary" dentists at a Warwick Hospital car park have been put forward to the district council.

South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust (SWFT) has applied for permission for the single-storey unit, which it says would be in place for five years.

The trust said the surgery space is needed to help keep up with the rising demand for services, which it says will only intensify as the local population grows.

"Warwick Hospital has developed and evolved over the years to keep up with clinical requirements, services and demands," the application to Warwick District Council said.

"As the planning history demonstrates there have been a number of additions and alterations over the years and Warwick Hospital is now at the point where services are now being compromised because of the accommodation limitations on the site.

"After a review, the best option was to redevelop the site to provide better service delivery as a focus for medical care within Warwick."

If approved, the portakabin-type structure will be built on car park J and will see up to 33 spaces lost.

The site off Millers Road is currently used for staff parking.

"The temporary displacement of the dental surgery unit from the hospital site into car park J is part of this overview and decant for services on the main site to aid the redevelopment of the central core," the application added.

"This development is an important part of the wider review of the hospital and how it grows in serving the population of Warwick and beyond.

"By temporarily decanting the dental surgery to the proposed location, works integral to the redevelopment of the main hospital site can be undertaken."

SWFT is already well underway on building its new elective hub at the hospital, as it looks to completely remodel the entrance.

It has also recently been announced that Marks & Spencer and Costa will open stores at the hospital once the new build is complete.
