A new cycle track has been created to help link Coventry city centre and the University of Warwick.

The temporary two-way lane on Charters Avenue was made permanent by Coventry City Council on Monday, December 5.

It runs from the road's intersections with Sir Henry Parkes Road and the A45's junction with Cannon Hill Road.

The route will now become part of the National Cycle Network. Bikes using the cycle lane are currently separated from traffic with bollards. Work to put a kerb next to the cycle track will start in January.

The changes will be funded from a grant allocation of £0.25m from the DfT's Active Travel Fund via the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA.)

A council report said the cycle lane was brought in back in 2020 to improve Coventry's links with the nearby University of Warwick.

It added: "A consultation carried out in March 2021 found that 85% of respondents supported segregated cycleways, which are physically separated from vehicular traffic.

"The resulting scheme proposals have taken on board feedback in terms of arrangements at bus stops and allowing cars to pass buses.

"The scheme is supported by the University of Warwick and forms the first phase of a network to serve Canley, Cannon Park and the campus via Lynchgate Road."
