Lib Dems announce candidates for Kenilworth elections
The local Liberal Democrats have announced further details of their candidates standing in the local town and district council elections this May.
Residents will take to the polls on Thursday, May 4, to vote in councillors for Warwick District Council and Kenilworth Town Council.
For the latter, 17 representatives will be elected across five wards. Meanwhile nine councillors will represent the town on the district council.
The Lib Dems have put forward 11 candidates, many of whom are standing in both elections.
Here are the details for all the Lib Dem candidates for Warwick District Council:
Abbey & Arden
Annabell Gurney-Terry - A resident of the West Midlands her whole life, Annabell says she understands the "needs and expectations of local residents".
"I'm creative and want to use my skills to create policies that champion sustainability and improve local facilities in Kenilworth," she said.
"As a student and from an underprivileged area, I'm passionate about improving life for young people."
Tim Macy - Another local student, Tim said he is committed to being an accessible and approachable councillor.
He commented: "As a local student I feel it is especially important to ensure young voices are heard in local government and I'll work tirelessly to represent them where they have historically been excluded."
And making up the Abbey & Arden team is Ederyn Williams, a Warwickshire resident of 20 years. Ederyn said he wanted to strike a balance between commercial development and nature.
He gained the Queen's Award for Innovation Promotion in 2010 having helped create over 100 innovative technology companies. "So I understand the needs of small businesses," he said.
Park Hill
Current town councillor Alan Chalmers is standing in the Park Hill ward in this year's WDC elections.
"Amongst other responsibilities, including for the provision of gritbins, I am vice-chair of the town council's English Heritage liaison committee and am currently helping prepare the coronation events that will be held at the castle in May," he said.
"I am a professor at the University of Warwick and have lived in Kenilworth for over 15 years. My wife works in the town and my three children have all gone to school here.
"For the last four years I have been proud to serve as a Kenilworth town councillor."
He will be joined on the ballot paper by Silvia Fuchss and Adrian Marsh.
St John's
All three seats for St John's are currently occupied by Liberal Democrats - with all three set to try and retain their places this May.
Andrew Milton, who first became a councillor in 2019, has since chaired the district council's overview and scrutiny committee and at Kenilworth Town Council set up and chaired the cycling delivery group.
"Working in marketing throughout his career in FTSE 100 companies, I am now a director at one of the region's leading marketing consultancies working with local, national and global clients so I understand the pressures of running a business," he said.
"I'm passionate about making cycling more accessible to everybody and I've successfully campaigned for better cycling infrastructure across the district. I'm also keen that our young people are better served by local councils and is leading efforts to get a local skatepark refurbished."
Husband and wife Richard and Kate Dickson will also be running in St John's ward.
Kate said: "I am proud to call Kenilworth my home and I love listening to local residents. I hear that people want councillors that are approachable and effective, so I want to use my experience to serve my community in an effective way.
"I want families in Kenilworth to live in safe, comfortable and energy-efficient buildings with access to community facilities that will help make their property into a home."
While Richard, who like Kate is also a town councillor, said: "For me being a councillor is about working with people based on their needs, not arrogantly doing things to them or, patronisingly, for them.
"That's why I was so inspired to get involved with the work of Compassionate Kenilworth in helping people both through and after the Covid crisis."
He said investment is needed in: community groups everyone can access, schemes to respond to the climate emergency, and improving democratic processes.
Here are the details for all the Lib Dem candidates for Kenilworth Town Council:
Kenilworth Abbey
Both Annabell Gurney-Terry and Ederyn Williams also standing in the Abbey ward for Kenilworth Town Council.
Kenilworth Borrowell
Alan Chalmers and Kate Dickson will attempt to retain their seats on Kenilworth Town Council, while Josh Payne is looking to be elected to the council for the first time.
Josh has volunteered with charities working in courts and prisons, supporting a diverse range of people.
"I'm standing for the Liberal Democrats because now, more than ever, we need an open society where every individual can progress on merit," he said.
"I want to serve our local community to the very best of my ability."
Kenilworth Dalehouse
Silvia Fuchss will also be standing in the town council election.
"I'm keen to raise awareness of the needs of children in their everyday life, e.g. modern, accessible playgrounds and spaces for young people," she said.
"I want to help lower CO2 emissions in the local community and improve our waste reduction rates."
Kenilworth Park Hill
Simon Want is another Lib Dem member standing for election to both councils.
Kenilworth St. John`s
Meanwhile St John's has four prospective Lib Dem candidates, including both Richard Dickson and Andrew Milton.
They are joined by Alison Insley, a local resident of over 30 years who is a well-known volunteer with organisations across the area.
Now a part-time cycling Instructor and squash coach, Alison said: "If local residents trust me with their vote, my recent experience in both the public and community sectors should enable me to serve them effectively as their councillor."
Adrian Marsh is also standing in St John's.
He said: "I've been a Kenilworth resident for 25+ years and my children grew up here. I believe local arts, education, sports facilities and our community must be protected and given the opportunity to thrive. In my work life I've been a passionate supporter of skills development, promoting apprenticeships and helping disadvantaged communities build capacity."
