Kenilworth's MP says he has "every confidence" in Rishi Sunak as the country's next prime minister.

Mr Sunak was announced as the new PM today as Penny Mordaunt dropped out of the Conservative Party leadership contest.

The former chancellor becomes the UK's first British Asian PM and at 42, the youngest in more than a century.

Following the announcement, MP for Kenilworth and Southam Sir Jeremy Wright told Nub News: "At this moment, political and economic stability is needed so I think Penny Mordaunt has done the right thing in the national interest in ensuring the new prime minister can begin to deliver it as soon as possible.

"I have every confidence in Rishi Sunak's ability to do a great job at a very difficult time."

Speaking on BBC Coventry and Warwickshire ahead of the announcement Sir Jeremy backed Mr Sunak to be the next PM and said Boris Johnson had made the right decision in pulling out of the leadership race.

"I don't think anybody was to blame for his downfall apart from him, and that makes it wholly inappropriate that he should return now, so I am glad he has done that," he said.

The former attorney general also said the last two PM's had not been chosen because they were competent.

"We have forgotten the most important thing to do is pick a leader who is competent, who will run an effective government and deliver the things that your party has been elected to deliver," he added.

"And if we forget that we cannot be surprised when it goes wrong."

Elsewhere in south Warwickshire, MP for Stratford-on-Avon Nadhim Zahawi was left embarrassed last night when an article he had written for the Telegraph backing Mr Johnson was published as the former PM withdrew from the leadership race.

The article was quickly pulled down and Mr Zahawi then gave his backing to Mr Sunak.
