Kenilworth's MP welcomes 'minimum disruption' of new parliamentary constituency
Jeremy Wright has welcomed the 'minimal disruption' that changes to Kenilworth's constituency will cause if they are approved.
The MP for Kenilworth and Southam has also said that he supports the aim of the Boundary Commission in making constituencies roughly the same size.
This morning a proposal revealed plans that could see the Kenilworth and Southam constituency expand in size.
If plans are approved it would take in Hatton, Hampton Magna, Sherbourne, Barford and Wasperton from the Warwick and Leamington constituency, completely surrounding the latter. Speaking to Kenilworth Nub News Mr Wright has said: "These proposals from the Boundary Commission reflect an intention to make constituencies across the UK roughly the same size, which is an objective I support. "Some change to the Kenilworth and Southam constituency was inevitable to achieve that and it seems to me the Boundary Commission proposals in Warwickshire achieve this objective with minimal disruption, though I appreciate that this will be a confusing change for some." If the proposals are approved Old Milverton and Blackdown would be absorbed from Kenilworth and Southam into the Warwick and Leamington constituency. The electorate for Kenilworth and Southam would also increase from 63,000 to 74,000. Mr Wright added: "It is also worth remembering that these are initial proposals, on which there will now be consultation and which may be altered before the process is complete." The initial proposals will now be subject to consultations and revisions, the first of which will run for eight weeks until 2 August. A second consultation with public hearings will then get under way in spring 2022, followed by a final four-week consultation on revised plans in autumn 2022. Final recommendations are due by 1 July 2023, after which the government has four months to alter the plans. The changes will only come into effect in late 2023, which could be be too late for the next election if PM Boris Johnson decides to call it early.
