Kenilworth's MP offers conditional support for development of Gigafactory

MP for Kenilworth and Southam Jeremy Wright has said that his support for a new Gigafactory located at Coventry Airport comes "not without condition" as he considers the impact for local people.

It was announced in February that planning permission was being sought for the factory to be built on green belt land near the airport, land which falls within the Kenilworth and Southam constituency.

It is hoped that production could begin by 2025 as the factory looks to supply electric car batteries for manufacturers across the UK.

In a statement on his website Mr Wright said: "It has my support, too, though not without condition.

"I doubt that the days of passenger airport operations and jet airliners will be much missed by the villages that surround the airport site or the damaged roof tiles and ruined barbecues they brought with them, but those villages are entitled to protection from the impact of factory operations that may replace them.

"Extra traffic has to be properly managed, and the appropriate planning processes must be followed. Crucially, the airport site is green belt land, significant in separating urban areas.

"The green belt should only be developed in exceptional circumstances, and while I can see the case for this Gigafactory being exceptional, with all its likely advantages to the wider area both now and in the future, I cannot see the same case for other or future possible uses of the land."

The announcement of the Gigafactory came just a fortnight before Jaguar announced that they would only produce electric cars from 2025 as the automotive industry in England begins to move gradually in that direction.
