Kenilworth Town Council backs plans to expand 20mph town centre speed limit
Plans to extend the 20mph speed limit across the centre of Kenilworth have been backed by the town council.
At Thursday's full Kenilworth Town Council meeting members voted in favour of asking the county council to introduce a 20mph speed area for the town, subject to a public consultation.
The decision by KTC comes just days before Warwickshire County Council's cabinet discusses a report on reduced speed limits for the entire county.
Speaking at last nights meeting Cllr Alix Dearing said there was huge support in Kenilworth for the idea.
"I have spoken to a lot of residents about 20mph limits," she said.
"The one point that has come out very strongly to me, about what people don't want, is a variety of different speed limits throughout the town.
"The consistency that this motion has in 20mph limits throughout Kenilworth is what makes it a really powerful one."
However, Cllr Rik Spencer, who sits on the WCC group looking into reduced speed limits urged members to wait for cabinet's decision.
"This is a bit of a hot topic," he said.
"As you know I am a member of the 20mph cross-party working group at the county council.
"Our report has been formulated and will be presented to cabinet next Tuesday. It will be cabinet who decide whether or not to adopt the recommendations or ignore them.
"I will respectively ask that you withdraw this motion and ask that you bring it back after the cabinet meeting."
But with 14 other town and parish councils in Warwickshire already voting in favour of 20mph speed areas, Cllr James Kennedy said Kenilworth needed to express an opinion ahead of next week.
"I would urge that we do pass this motion at this stage and get it to the county council as soon as possible to show the strength of feeling from Kenilworth when they come to consider this," he said.
"We know that the county council has the final verdict on this, but we hope that they will be willing to listen to residents and members of this council before they start to make their deliberations."
The motion was passed by seven votes to zero, will all three Conservative members abstaining.
