People who would otherwise spend Christmas Day on their own are being invited for a free Christmas Dinner on December 25 at Kenilworth Sporting.

The Gypsy Lane club will be opening its doors from 3pm on Christmas Day and is now looking for people to get in touch to sign up.

Club secretary Andy Harris told Nub News: "We keep reading in the news about what is a crisis of people spending Christmas on their own.

"We have discussed it for the past two Christmases but obviously with Covid in 2020, and again last year so we couldn't do it. But we just wanted to give it a go."

He added: "We're not just offering it to single people though. Even couples that don't want to be alone on the day are more than welcome to come down."

Andy hopes to have around 25 people on the day and has already raised £450 to cover all their costs which he said was far more money than he had expected.

Five members of his family will be at the club all day cooking and then eating with the guests.

And now he is calling on local people to spread the word, to make sure nobody in the town has to spend Christmas Day on their own, if they don't want to.

"There's not been that many people so far coming forward to take us up on the offer," he added.

"We just need to get this out there for people, to let them know that we are there.

"I think there is a bit of stigma attached to it, where people don't want to admit that they need it."
