Kenilworth planning roundup: New housing sites, HS2 and 'unlimited costs' for A46

Here are the biggest local planning stories from the past week.

New Housing Sites

Residents will next year be given their say on plans for new housing sites around Kenilworth.

Stratford-on-Avon and Warwick District Councils are looking to move forward with the much-delayed South Warwickshire Local Plan (SWLP) which will see around 35,000 houses built across the region over the next 25 years.

Having already asked locals for their input, the local authorities have whittled down potential areas for development to a shortlist of 36 spots - 12 of which could see new settlements created.

HS2's Generosity

HS2 has given £75,000 to Warwick District Council (WDC) to help fund finishing touches at the over-budget and much-delayed Abbey Fields Leisure Centre project.

Funding will pay for "external landscaping and groundwork improvements".

HS2 said the funding - from its Community & Environment Fund (CEF) - will go towards creating an "engaging outdoor space" surrounding the new pool building, featuring footpaths, landscaping and public seating areas, all "sensitively designed to blend in with the historic location".

'Unlimited' Costs for A46

Fears that Warwickshire County Council could face an "unlimited" bill to finally connect a multi-million pound bridge linger following a meeting for all councillors this week.

Issues related to the new roundabout that is to straddle and serve the A46 in Kenilworth were raised twice in questions to cabinet members followed by a 15-minute behind-closed-doors briefing held in private session.

The £38 million project, announced in December 2020, was set to be completed by the summer of 2022 but work has now been delayed for longer than it was due to last for.
