Kenilworth's Air Cadets have a bright future but certainty about the location of their premises is urgently needed, say Kenilworth's Liberal Democrats.

Kenilworth and Balsall Common's 496 Squadron currently meets on Monday and Thursday evenings at bespoke leased premises on the existing Kenilworth School site at Leyes Lane.

But the group, which has 28 cadets aged between 12 and 20 from across the town, is currently waiting to hear where it will meet when the new Kenilworth School opens later this year.

"The Air Cadets provide a great opportunity for local young people and the town is really fortunate to have such committed volunteer leaders," said Cllr Richard Dickson.

"The new Kenilworth School is now due to open in less than seven months time.

"The squadron needs to know as soon as possible exactly what the arrangements are either for at least like-for-like facilities at the new school site or if it can stay at Leyes Lane.

"Having a lot more young people in Kenilworth is a great opportunity for the squadron to grow, but it needs to know where it will be based and with what facilities so it can plan accordingly."

An event was held recently at the Leyes Lane site informing residents on plans to build new houses there once the new school opens on Glasshouse Lane.

Leader of Warwick District Council, Cllr Andrew Day recently told local Scout and Guide representatives that they would be able to use the Leyes Lane site - where they currently meet - until the new facilities are opened at Castle Farm Recreation Centre.

The range of activities offered to local cadets includes summer camps at RAF bases, glider training, RAF sports events, first aid courses and opportunities in the Squadron's marching band.

The large number of new houses being built in Kenilworth will bring many new families to the area in the next few years and the Squadron is looking forward to welcoming more young people to its ranks.
