Offenders on community service will help clean up the graffiti in Kenilworth as the town is used as a pilot for a county-wide scheme.

Starting with the 'out demons out' sprayed on the wall next to Forrest Coffee House, unwanted graffiti across the town centre will be removed in the coming weeks.

Offenders given community service orders have helped clear up the town centre on various projects since the late 2000's.

The scheme had to be scaled back during the pandemic, but following a rise in graffiti in the past two years Kenilworth Streetpride has announced a renewed effort to clean up the town centre.

"As chair of the street pride group, we have been working with the unpaid work scheme for quite a long time, and we have a really good relationship with them," said Cllr Rob Barry at last month's full council meeting.

"They have been affected by Covid which is why they haven't been able to provide a service for us for quite a long time.

"Now they are getting back on their feet and have worked so well with Kenilworth in the past they see us as a pilot project and therefore we may be able to avoid paying any supervision fees."

Run by Kenilworth Town Council, unanimous approval was given for the group to spend £1,200 on equipment for the clean up.

Funding will come from the Welcome Back Fund, which will also pay for some new flower planters outside Forrest as well as for Abbey End to be jet washed.

Whilst graffiti will be removed from various locations, much of what is sprayed at Castle Farm skate park will be left as it is - so long as it is not offensive in any way.

Kenilworth Streetpride is also hoping that councillors and residents will volunteer to help with the clean up.
