Kenilworth fire crews were called to a lorry fire between junctions 17 and 16 on the M1 this morning (October 6).

Four fire engines from Moulton, Mereway and Rugby were already fighting the blaze with a water carrier from Northamptonshire.

However, Kenilworth's water carrier was also called out at 7am this morning to help tackle the southbound carriageway fire.

The fire, which began at 6.15am, caused huge traffic jams with cars queueing all six miles back to Rugby.

Three out of four lanes remained closed for most of the morning. The carriageway did not fully reopen until 3pm.

A Kenilworth fire crew spokesperson said: "Crews supplied water to the fire ground who were using jets to extinguish one articulated lorry trailer fully involved in fire.

"Shortly after our return our pump was mobilised to standby at Leamington fire station to provide fire cover to the area due to other ongoing incidents in the south of the county."
