Kenilworth fire crews called to haystack fires that 'could be seen for miles around'

By James Smith 5th Aug 2021

Kenilworth fire crews were called to two haystacks fires in Wolvey last night that could be "seen for miles around".

The fires, which were in a field off Smockington Lane, required a water carrier from Kenilworth as well as crews from Nuneaton, Bedworth and Rugby.

The first crews were called out at 10.41pm and managed to contain the fire to one field, but had to call the electricity board as the fire was affecting overhead power lines.

Crews have been in attendance throughout today and will be for the coming days as the fire is monitored and allowed to burn out.

A Warwickshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said last night: "The incident in Wolvey can be seen from miles around.

"Our crews are monitoring the fire and ensuring that the fire does not spread to surrounding fields. We will be in attendance overnight and into tomorrow dealing with this incident."
