A Kenilworth town and district councillor is encouraging residents to get on their bikes tomorrow and take part in National Cycle to Work Day.

Chair of Kenilworth Town Council's cycling delivery group Cllr Andrew Milton has said that the day is a perfect opportunity for people to try the commute on two wheels for the first time.

Kenilworth Nub News' editor, James, will be joining Cllr Milton by bicycle on his daily commute from Kenilworth to Leamington Spa tomorrow.

Cllr Milton said: "Getting more people to use their bikes for regular journeys is a no-lose situation. It reduces congestion, improves air quality, lowers our use of carbon and it's good for our physical and mental wellbeing.

"Days like tomorrow are an important part of the campaign for better facilities for cyclists but also to encourage people to perhaps try the commute for the first time."

Cycling provision in Kenilworth has featured heavily in the news recently. Following the announcement of the K2L cycleway in January, local charity Cycleways has recently revealed an ambitious plan for a district-wide cycle network.

Similarly, following the redevelopment of the Kenilworth Greenway by HS2, questions are still being asked as to when it will be fully extended to Balsall Common.

However, Cllr Milton has said that investment in cycling locally will not just benefit keen cyclists, but also those who may be new to commuting by bike.

"Many experienced cyclists are happy to brave the roads, but it's not always a pleasant experience and can be a real barrier for people," he said.

"There's an established link between the presence of cycle paths and the amount of people who commute by bike so clearly if we're serious about changing people's travel habits new infrastructure has to be part of the picture."

Whilst many residents continue to work from home, other councillors we spoke to have said that they will still be marking the day tomorrow.

Cllr Richard Dickson told us that he would still be taking part: "I'm working at home but will go out for a ride and come back home again. It all helps our response to the climate change emergency."
