Town councillors have agreed to look after a new bench in Kenilworth but are yet to decide on whether to take control of all benches in the area.

Kenilworth Town Council last week voted to take charge of the new bench which is due to be installed at Dencer Drive, following a request from county councillor Tracey Drew.

The decision came after a second lengthy debate by councillors who are trying to decide whether to take responsibility for all the benches in Kenilworth.

At the previous debate, members said they wanted to know how much money would actually be involved.

And at last week's meeting, town clerk Maggie Field said she had asked Warwickshire County Council for more details.

"Unfortunately the actual detail for the bench the county were providing, we requested, but they were not forthcoming," she told councillors.

"We couldn't get an actual price for removal and replacement.

"The county advised it could take up to 12 months to get a quote for the price of installation."

It was discussed that once the new bench is installed in Dencer Drive, the town council will be responsible for its maintenance and for removing or replacing it at the end of its life.

Cllr Mark Stevens said it is "an opportunity to do something good for our own community" by looking after the local benches.

Cllr Richard Dickson added: "I would much prefer if those other benches I have mentioned are included at this time so it is clear who owns all the benches in this town.

"At the moment, nobody owns the benches.

"So if they got damaged, it would not be clear and I doubt whether the county and certainly not the district would want to take any actions to restore those benches."

Meanwhile, Cllr Andrew Miltonv said more information is still needed.

"I feel very positive about the intention of what we are trying to do, but already we have gone from one bench, to three to five," he said.

"What I would really love is if someone just came forward with a proposal and a plan, saying 'this is what we are going to do, this is what it involves, this is the plan for the ongoing maintenance, this is what we are going to put aside, this is the staff time we are going to need, this is how we are going to make sure members of the public know how to report problems with benches'."

He added: "The timelines with county council are so long, we don't need to make a decision tonight."

A more detailed plan is expected at a future town council meeting.
