A former Coventry City and Everton footballer, who now lives in Kenilworth, has been named the interim England men's team manager.

Following the departure of Gareth Southgate earlier this summer, the post has yet to be filled permanently, but former midfielder Lee Carsley will take charge for September's Nations League fixtures.

The Football Association continues to search for a full time appointment.

Carsley was named under-21 manager in 2021, having been manager of the under-20s since September 2020.

He has also been a coach at Coventry, Sheffield United, Manchester City, and Brentford.

"As I am very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, it makes sense for me to guide the team while the FA continues the process to recruit a new manager," Carsley said.

"My main priority is to ensure continuity and our goal is to secure promotion in the Uefa Nations League."

The 50-year-old spent most of his playing career at Everton, as well as two stints at Coventry, and a two-year spell at rivals Birmingham City.

Carsley, who was raised in Sheldon in Birmingham, played 40 times for the Republic of Ireland.

"Lee is a fantastic coach who is well known to the majority of our current senior squad having worked with most at international or club level," said FA chief executive Mark Bullingham.

"He offers us a very strong interim solution and we are confident he will perform well in the Uefa Nations League games ahead.

"We are grateful to Lee for stepping up to manage the team while we continue with our recruitment process."

Carsley's appointment has been made with a view to remaining in the position throughout autumn while the FA's recruitment process for a new permanent head coach continues.

In Carsley's absence, Ben Futcher will take charge of the MU21s for September's forthcoming 2025 U21 EURO qualifiers, with respective backroom teams for both squads to be confirmed in due course.
