Locals have been given the chance to have their say on plans to double the capacity of a Kenilworth primary school and add extra special needs and disability (SEND) places.

Warwickshire County Council (WCC) announced last month that proposed changes at St John's Primary School and Nursery would go to a four-week public consultation.

The scheme could see the Mortimer Road school have "several new extensions", increasing from one to two forms of entry from September 2024.

This would boost the capacity by 210 pupils over the next seven years. 

WCC is also proposing to establish specialist resourced provision for up to 14 primary school aged children with education, health and care plans (EHCPs) that can be catered for in a mainstream school.

A council report states they will be children whose "primary needs are social, emotional and mental health". 

The public consultation is now open and runs until October 29.

"We welcome your views on the proposal and all viewpoints will be taken into account as part of the decision-making process," the consultation says.

It added: "Current and proposed housing development in Kenilworth town is forecast to increase reception cohorts and applications to other year groups over the next five years.

"It is proposed to increase the number of primary places in Kenilworth to meet forecast demand through the expansion of St John's Primary School from one form entry (210 places) to two form entry (420 places).

"In order to meet forecast demand and build on the local offer of specialist resourced provision (SRP), the local authority is continuing the development of SRP's across the county whereby pupils, who are able to access a mainstream curriculum, can have their needs met and benefit from being located within a mainstream school environment.

"The main growth and investment continues to be in specialist provision for pupils with communication and interaction needs and social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) difficulties."

If locals support the plans, final costings will then be drawn up for the council to discuss.
