Residents have placed a blue plaque near the stump of the Hunningham Oak which was chopped down as part of the local HS2 works.

Protestors were joined by the Royal Leamington Brass Band to walk to the stump from Hunningham on Sunday.

The tree, which was nominated as Tree of the Year in 2020, was felled on September 24 the same year.

Located between Offchurch and Hunningham, the 300-year-old tree was not actually on the HS2 line, but was felled to make way for a service road and the realignment of Hunningham Road.

Organised by the Hunningham Oak Blue Plaque Supporters group, speakers and banner holders were also joined by the 'HS2 White Elephant' to mark the placing of the plaque.

The plaque even has a QR code to allow residents to view the plaque on their mobile devices.

Kenilworth resident Clive Peacock who was in attendance at the event said: "It was a remarkable turnout - including the HS2 White Elephant - with lots of banners and speakers.

"The event was treated with great respect - sombre music, no laughter, strong applause of speakers and brilliant organisation.

"It even ran to time and everything was accomplished. Model protesting In this abnormal world!"
