Fairtrade fortnight goes virtual in Kenilworth this year

By James Smith 5th Aug 2021

The annual 'Fairtrade Fortnight' hosted by the group Fairtrade Kenilworth will be held virtually this year.

Running between Monday, February 22 and Sunday, March 7 the annual event is hosted "to entertain, educate and inspire, while raising awareness of the effects of the climate crisis on vulnerable farming communities."

Fairtrade Fortnight in Kenilworth will form part of a worldwide event for Fairtrade Foundation groups, incorporating online events both local and international.

Secretary of Kenilworth Fairtrade Steve Proctor said: "Due to Covid, everything will be online this year, but the website has lots of things to do and take part in virtually.

"This year there is a particular emphasis on how climate change is affecting farmers in developing countries along with how the Covid pandemic has driven producer prices down."

The Kenilworth group will be posting daily updates, articles and information about Fairtrade throughout the fortnight, as well as offering online Fairtrade teaching resources to all the local schools.

As well as baking a real Fairtrade cake for the town councillors, Kenilworth Fairtrade will also be hosting a zoom coffee morning on February 27.

Open to all residents, the coffee morning will be a chance to connect and learn a little more about Fairtrade from the comfort of your home whilst the lockdown situation prevents this from happening in person.

If you wish to attend the meeting then email [email protected] for a link.

The Fairtrade Foundation will also be running online events during the fortnight, this includes a youth exhibition called 'Choose the World You Want' which is targeted at five to 25 year-olds.

There will also be cook-alongs, meetings, talks, crafting sessions and stories from farmers affected by climate change.
