'Don't call us, we'll call you' - HS2 brushes off council complaints over lack of communication

Town councillors' protests about the lack of engagement before the closure of the A429 by HS2 have seemingly fallen on deaf ears.

Kenilworth Town Council had heavily criticised the high speed rail developer for its "disgraceful" lack of notice around the closure, which has seen the main route into town shut since September 30.

The issue was further exacerbated when HS2 pushed back its closure, just days after saying it would begin in early September.

Speaking at a council meeting earlier in the year, Cllr Adrian Marsh said: "It compounds some of the issues related to road disruption within the town.

"It is another example of the callous disregard of the local community and it appears to be - unless I am incorrect - no attempt to advise those who are part of liaison groups, or give advance warning to local representatives."

The council asked the town's MP Sir Jeremy Wright to press the issue with HS2, and Cllr Kate Dickson read out a short part of the lengthy response which summarised the developer's position at the most recent town council meeting.

"Noting the town council is raising concerns about the lack of consultation from HS2 / BBV, it is important to note that post royal assent there is no requirement to consult on proposals or submissions that fall within the phase one act powers," it said.

"Rather, the emphasis is on engagement with contracted communities and stakeholders, which include Kenilworth Town Council, to make sure they are aware of construction-related activities in relation to the HS2 engagement framework."

Cllr Alan Chlamers quipped "don't call us, we'll call you" in response.

Meanwhile, Cllr Marsh also gave a brief update on HS2's upcoming 21-day closure of the A46 for a new bridge to be installed, with no date for the works yet to be confirmed.

"There is much disruption to local roads at the moment due to HS2 and that is likely to continue for some years yet," he said.

"There is still some confusion into the impact of the closure of the A46 for HS2 works, due to the continuing delays to Warwickshire County Council's works at the Stoneleigh interchange.

"There is still some question about whether the closure will take place until the works on the A46 have been completed."
