The Talisman Theatre is set to present a comedy classic next week.

The Barrow Road theatre will bring the stage adaptation of The Ladykillers, by Graham Linehan, from Monday 29 August to Saturday 3 September each evening at 7.30pm.

The Ladykillers is a classic black comedy; a sweet little old lady, alone in her house, is pitted against five oddball criminals who will stop at nothing.

The plot is centred around the septuagenarian Mrs Wilberforce, who accommodates Professor Marcus, a very keen amateur musician, in her very creaky and subsided Victorian house, at the end of a cul-de-sac near to Kings Cross St Pancras station.

Mrs Wilberforce is thrilled to not only have a talented musician in her lodgings, but also to have another four equally gifted violinists and cello aficionados join the professor in their rehearsals of the Boccherini Minuet, practised in the room lodged out to the professor.

But what Mrs Wilberforce doesn't know is that the five musicians are actually planning a security van heist, and manage to successfully execute the robbery and get her to deliver the loot safely back to the house, assisted by the local constabulary, all in absolute ignorance.

This stage adaptation from the 1955 film by Graham Linehan, the writer of Father Ted, The IT Crowd, and Black Books, sets this play one year later at the time of the Suez Canal conflict, an incident that resulted in a very bruised ego for the Great British Empire.

The sleazy, smokey jazz clubs of London that attracted the eclectic echelons of London society, were the very places our characters in this play may well have known themselves.

And the show will come at the same time as the return of Talisman Fringe to the Holiday Inn on Thursday, September 1.
