Plans for new allotments at a Kenilworth housing estate have received support from the organisation which runs the town's existing plots.

Vistry Group has put forward plans for the facilities at its new housing estate off Glasshouse Lane.

The allotments will form part of the 620 homes which were given planning permission in 2022.

An application to Warwick District Council says there will be "high-quality space for allotments" over two parcels of land.

The first will have 15 allotments - a mixture of full and half size plots - and the second will have 12 with a mixture of full, half and quarter size.

Responding to the application last month, Kenilworth Allotment Tenants' Association (KATA) "on the whole" agrees with the plans.

"We are very pleased to see the inclusion of sheds on the plots, along with water butts. Along with cattle type water troughs from the mains supply," the group wrote.

KATA said it would split some of the plots in half to give greater "flexibility of expansion of a plotholders area or reduction if they can't cope with a full plot".

However, the association did raise concerns about the risk of flooding.

The feedback continued: "I do have a concern (raised previously with the developer) about prevention of flooding from the roadway entrance at site 131.

"This is at the bottom of a long downhill section of highway and without suitable and significant provision of drainage across the site entrance then I believe that in the event of heavy rainfall we will suffer with flood water coming down onto the carpark and the remainder of the site.

"We would like to see this explained and drainage shown."

Detailed plans for the major estate - which will wrap around the Woodside Hotel and new Kenilworth School - were approved by Warwick District Council in November 2022 despite concerns over sustainability.

Plans show each allotment will also receive a timber shed and 210L water butt.

Designs show the two spots will be surrounded by fencing and new hedgerows.

Vistry said: "Kenilworth Town Council will be responsible for the ongoing maintenance and management of the allotment areas during the lifetime of the development.

"The rectification period shall be for 12 months, after which the town council is liable for any failures, maintenance and management including necessary replanting, watering, resurfacing, repairs and or replacements."
