A Kenilworth councillor who has campaigned for the release of British-Iranian woman Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe from Iran, has welcomed the news today that she is on her way home after nearly six years.

MP for Hampstead and Kilburn Tulip Siddiq tweeted that Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe was at the airport in Tehran waiting to make her way home today.

She was arrested in 2016 accused of plotting to overthrow the Iranian government.

The 43-year-old, who has family in Warwickshire, has denied the charges.

She was given back her passport this week and has now been freed from house arrest.

"After more than 2,170 days this is excellent news," said town and district councillor Cllr Richard Dickson.

"For the family and everyone – locally and nationally - who's campaigned tirelessly for more than five years, it's must be a huge relief.

"Our best wishes go to the family, both in London and here in Warwickshire, who can now begin to move on in peace."

MP for Kenilworth and Southam Jeremy Wright visited Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe's husband, Richard Ratcliffe, during his hunger strike outside the Foreign Office last October.

Cllr Dickson had called on the town's MP to do more to support Mr Ratcliffe and his family.
