30 new trees planted across Kenilworth 'will benefit everyone'
30 new trees have been planted across Kenilworth by volunteers from Warwick Tree Wardens and local councillors.
Organised by Cllr Rik Spencer, the planting was inspired by his predecessor at Warwickshire County Council, Alan Cockburn.
Trees have been planted across the town but there has been a particular focus on the Castle Farm area.
"The planting was a project that my predecessor at county level Alan Cockburn championed, and I have just picked up the baton," said Cllr Spencer.
"And because of the development going on at Castle Farm, to try and improve the area for the residents and to stop people parking on the verges, we have planted a lot along Fishponds Road in particular."
Plans for the planting began to take shape last year when residents were asked whether they wanted a tree in their road or not.
Warwick Tree Wardens then helped whittle down the requests to find suitable sites, before neighbours were asked again if they had any objections.
"A lot of thanks must go to Sarah Ridgeway of the tree wardens," added Cllr Spencer.
"Every tree has been carefully looked at where they should go, because obviously we don't want trees that will grow and rip up the footpath. So there is a lot more effort put into it then people comprehend – certainly more than I originally thought.
"Sarah has been amazing, she has championed all of it."
The trees, which have been paid for by Kenilworth Town Council using a grant from one Cllr Spencer's councillor funds, are all three or four years old.
Before each tree was planted the ground was also scanned to make sure no cables would be dug up in the process.
And having been planted last Friday, yesterday and today, the trees are hoped to benefit everybody.
Cllr Spencer added: "They absorb pollution, they make the area a more pleasant place to live, and they even reduce noise from passing traffic.
"Everybody gets something from it, and the planet gets to benefit."
