Time is running out for Kenilworth Town Council to agree plans for three new murals in the town centre.

The council first announced it would decorate Abbey End last October, but members only have until the end of March to apply for funding.

Murals showing the Augustinian abbey, the castle and the the 1266 siege are planned for the walls next to Forrest Coffee House, the former hospice charity shop and the public toilets.

The council had originally planned for the mural by the empty shop to depict The Globe pub which was destroyed during the 1941 bombing.

But councillors decided against using the "unattractive" pub in the design.

"Actually our idea of having the Globe Hotel, having seen pictures of it, it wouldn't attract many people to see it," said Cllr Michael Coker.

"It was very much an old fashioned pub and I don't think it would draw crowds to see it."

KTC intends to apply for money from the government's welcome back fund to pay for the work.

But the grants, which are for temporary measures to encourage shoppers back to the high street, stop on March 31.

Cllr Coker added: "The other thing is though, this finishes in March so we are running out of time.

"This has been paused over Christmas for obvious reasons."

The council also hopes to use the funding to jet wash Abbey End and to repaint the lamp posts on High Street.
