Campaigners from the group Help Stop HS2, will be holding an event in Kenilworth by the clock tower this weekend to speak with, educate, and inspire local residents, so they can find out how to get involved in the campaign.

The 'National Tree Killing Day' outreach event is hoping to raise further awareness of the environmental impact of the construction of the new rail links. As tree felling, and clearance of hedgerows are now commencing across the country, the event is hoping to give a sense to residents of just how much of a difference will be made to the local landscape.

The event in Kenilworth will take place on Friday October 2, and Sunday 4 between 10.30am and 3pm, with a sister event in Leamington being held at the same times on October 1 and 3.

Event organisers have said "Many local people feel defeated and powerless. The event is about giving people hope that if the silent majority speaks out there is still a chance to get the government to rethink HS2.

"HS2 will damage or destroy 108 ancient woodlands, 5 internationally protected wildlife sites, 693 local wildlife sites and 33 SSSIs. From October 1, HS2 will be cutting through 20 ancient woodlands in Warwickshire."

The occasion will involve speeches and demonstrations by campaigners, and will allow members of the public the opportunity to ask questions and get information about how HS2 will be affecting the local area.

Attendees will be able to gather information not just on the environmental impact, but also the financial implications both in the short and the long term.

"People don't know what they can do to help, but we want to say here we are, this is the campaign so far, and this is how you can get involved.

"We want to be able to tell the stories of people further down the line who have already been affected.

"The event really is about reaching out the the community."

This week campaigners at the Crackley Woods camp have been hosting a 'Skill Up' event, which has been allowing local people the opportunity to experience camp life, as well as learn new talents and meet new people.

Event organisers for 'National Tree Killing Day' are asking attendees to strictly adhere to social distancing regulations.
