Councillors blame rise in fly-tipping on 'nonsense' opening times at local recycling centres

By James Smith 10th Mar 2022

Increased levels of fly-tipping in Kenilworth are due in part to the short opening hours at local recycling centres.

That was the message from councillors at Warwick District Council's overview and scrutiny meeting yesterday.

"Fly-tipping is increasing, there is no doubt about it," said Cllr Pam Redford.

"When are we going to get the county council to wake up to the fact that if you don't open the tips for long enough, people are going to just dump it on the verge?

"I have got lots of farmers who are just going up the wall because it is expanded to their fields, and we don't collect it from their fields so they are having to pay out.

"I can get really wound up about this one."

Restricted re-opening remains in place at Warwickshire County Council's nine recycling centres, including Cherry Orchard in Kenilworth.

And with fly-tipping incidents in Warwick district up 12 per cent last year, the district council is calling on its county-level colleagues to address the situation.

Cllr Alan Rhead said: "I have brought this up three times now, and every time they [WCC] say it is working well and that the booking system is very popular with people.

"And I say 'well I don't know anybody personally that finds it popular'.

"But perhaps we can write a letter to [WCC leader] Izzi Seccombe about this. It can't help that the tips are only open about five or six hours a day.

"It is a nonsense, and if we really do want to make this place look better before the Commonwealth Games then the county has a part to play as well."
