A couple who are cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats have been met by the mayor and deputy mayor as they passed through Kenilworth.

Andy and Jennie Stevenson are completing the near 900-mile distance to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

They started in the south west on 13 June, and expect to finish in John O'Groats on June 26.

The couple said: "We have always wanted to cycle from Lands End to John O'Groats but it was never the right time...family, work etc.

"Sadly Jen's dad, Jeff, passed away earlier this year in hospital with health complications including Covid-19 and heart issues. He was a very keen cyclist throughout his life and passed on this passion to most of his family.

"He was in fact cycling when he had one of his heart attacks."

Having stopped briefly in Stratford-upon-Avon to listen to some buskers, the pair reached Kenilworth and were met by Mayor of Kenilworth Cllr Peter Jones, and Deputy Mayor of Kenilworth Cllr Samantha Cooke last Thursday (June 17) in front of the castle.

They then enjoyed a well-earned stop over in Kenilworth with old school friends Sam and Alan Ainsworth.

Whilst the couple have never done anything like this before, they certainly do have some sporting pedigree in the family. Jennie is aunt to former Cycling Word Champion Lizzie Deignan (née Armistead) and Andy is an England Hockey Masters international. One of their sons also plays hockey at international level.

Having enjoyed their brief stop in Kenilworth, Andy and Jennie said: "We've been very fortunate to cycle through some lovely Warwickshire countryside that, thankfully, has also been relatively flat."
