The Kenilworth Lido Campaign Group has accused Warwick District Council of "deliberately and systematically" allowing the town's outdoor pool to fall into disrepair.

They have said that is is clear that Warwick District Council has "absolutely no intention" of allowing operators Everyone Active to reopen the lido in Abbey Fields this summer.

WDC announced this week that increasing the number of indoor swimming pools at the leisure centre was taking priority over opening the outdoor pool.

The district council has said that it is still reviewing the possibility of opening the lido this year.

The campaign group has said that the announcement "comes as no surprise" and that the council "has absolutely no intention" of reopening the pool in 2021.

Campaign group member Martin Seaton has said that the announcement did not tell the group anything that they didn't already know.

"It is absolutely clear to us," he said, "despite what we are being told to the contrary, WDC has absolutely no intention of opening the outdoor pool this summer as people will realise what a wonderful facility it is and this would lead to more outcry against the decision to close it permanently.

"Instead, WDC are using the government announcement as a further reason not to act and will continue to do so, until it is too late to open the pool this season."

Outdoor pools across the UK have been allowed to open since March 29.

Seaton added: "Furthermore, WDC tells us that all staff resources are being directed towards swimming lessons. Whilst we would not disagree with the sentiment, a cursory glance at the booking availability on Everyone Active's website would suggest that it is certainly not running at full capacity yet.

"It is clear that the both the outdoor and indoor pool at Abbey Fields are being deliberately and systematically allowed to go to rack and ruin, save some minor redecoration work inside.

"Indeed, if Swim England, who WDC say they are taking advice from regarding operating during the pandemic, could see the conditions the public have to face daily at the site, we believe they would be appalled."
